The Cascades This image may not be used to state or imply ESA endorsement of any company or product Algal blooms, Baltic Sea, satellite image. North is at top. The algal blooms (green) are an increase in the number of cyanobacteria in the sea due to increased nutrients in the water (often due to pollution). The highest concentrations are in the Central Baltic and around the Swedish island of Gotland (centre left). The Bay of Riga is at upper right. Near the coast of Finland, surface wind has cleared the waters of algae accumulations. Some species of cyanobacteria are toxic to humans and the blooms are monitored. This image was acquired on 13 July 2005 by the Medium Resolution Imaging Spectrometer (MERIS) instrument on the Envisat satellite.
